This bench mark was established between 1840 and 1860 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 247.4040 feet [75.4087 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included as a side level on the Basingstoke to Coventry levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 165(b). Barcheston Church. Bolt in North side of tower ; 3.90 ft. above surface" (Public Abstract p.239).
