Lettercraffroe Lough
Lettercraffroe Lough
Lettercraffroe Lough is a lake of 0.82 square kilometres surface area and lies at an altitude of 160 metres. The lake is located in lower central Connemara, just off the rural road linking Oughterard to Casla. This area of Connemara is very sparsely populated and is off the tourist trail. The phonetically anglicised name of the lake derives form the Gaelic, Leitir Creamha Rua, which seemingly translates as "Red hillside of the wild garlic." The adjoining road is heavily forested on either side by an extensive conifer plantation that completely obscures any roadside glimpse of this lake. It is however easily accessible by entering the Coillte lands and walking a few hundred metres on the rough track running through the plantation.
