Royal Sovereign light tower
Royal Sovereign light tower
Royal Sovereign lighthouse at 5.7 miles off Eastbourne is a lighthouse marking the Royal Sovereign shoal. Its one off distinctive form comprises a large platform supported by a single pillar rising out of the water.

In 1971 the lighthouse replaced a light vessel which had protected the Royal Sovereign Shoal since 1875. The platform was manned until 1994.

The light tower was constructed in two pieces on the Eastside beach at Newhaven.

The water where it is placed is about 14 metres deep. At very high tides it can be 10metres higher and reach the entry door. The navigation light is 28metres above sea level.
