Granite is often fractured into sheets, or "beds", that lie more or less parallel to the surface of the ground. Most sheets exposed at the surface are a foot or less in thickness; deeper down they increase in thickness. Sheeting is generally attributed to upward and sideways expansion of the granite as the overlying Silurian measures were gradually eroded away.
