L6359 : Shattered bedrock

taken 9 years ago, 3 km from Cleggan, Co Galway, Ireland

Shattered bedrock
Shattered bedrock
An outcrop of the Bennabeola Quartzite Formation (Dalradian) which is extremely pure and white in colour, but extensively shattered and showing no sign of the strata which are so pervasive further to the west (L6260 : Coastal rock exposure). It is overlain by glacial deposits comprising mostly fragments of the same rock, suggesting that it has been broken-up essentially in-situ, and is not a transported unit. It is worth noting that it is the outcrops of this formation which make the famous, white scree-slopes of the Twelve Bens.
