Wreck of the Plassy
Wreck of the Plassy
Probably the most recognised feature of Inis Oirr, the wreck of the MV Plassy has been here on the limestone reef since 8th March 1960 when she was driven ashore in a gale. Further storms have shifted the wreck since, but she is likely to remain here until she finally breaks up. The crew were rescued by islanders using a breeches buoy, whilst the cargo, which included whiskey was partly rescued as well. The ship was originally built as a trawler in 1940, later converted to a cargo vessel and renamed the Plassy in 1951.
