L9602 : Memorial stone, Inis Oirr

taken 9 years ago, near to Inisheer, Co Galway, Ireland

Memorial stone, Inis Oirr
Memorial stone, Inis Oirr
Initially this looks like an upturned slice of limestone with a hole in it, but on closer inspection it turns out to be a beautifully carved stone with the sea represented by the swirl in the centre, and an inscription in Irish along the bottom. It stands as a memorial to islanders lost at sea. See also the photo of the carved curragh in the centre of the stone.
