This benchmark was established in 1844 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 142.7180 feet [43.5004 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Manchester to Gloucester (Branch Levelling to Great Malvern Trigonometrical Station) levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 5. Mark on the 4th milestone from Upton-on-Severn and 4th from Great Malvern ; 0.40 ft. above centre of road" (Public Abstract p.41).
