ST9151 : From the top of Church Steps, St James the Great, Bratton
taken 8 years ago, near to Bratton, Wiltshire, England
St James’ Church in Bratton has often been referred to as the church in isolation, as at one time it was only accessible by tracks and field paths.
It is some distance from much of the village and separated from it by a deep combe.
In 1832 the road up to the church from Stradbrook was built. A little later, at the instigation of the Rev C Palairet, a series of 211 steps were constructed, making the church easier to reach from the village.
The steps had worn, become overgrown and generally fallen into disrepair but were restored in recent years by the 'Monday Gang', a group of volunteers who maintain the churchyard - see local news report Link
