Approaching Shrule Turlough
Shrule Turlough is a large turlough (seasonal lake that disappears in Springtime and returns in late Autumn early Winter) of circa 200 hectares. It is situated to the north west of Shrule village, County Mayo. It is designated as a SAC (Special Area of Conservation) but this does not deter politicians proposing the drainage of these unique natural water bodies which are found mainly in the west of Ireland. Unlike the east of the country where the limestone is covered, the lack of a protective cover west of the river Shannon leaves the limestone exposed and allows rainwater to dissolve it over time. This karstified limestone consists of underground channels and surface swallow holes that drain away the surface water. Heavy rains in the winter period increases the volume of water which cannot then be retained underground and tends to emerge onto the surface through springs. This shot of Shrule Turlough was taken in May 2014 which is unusual as normally Turloughs would have begun to disappear by this time of the year. The following video clip shows a turlough (Rahasane Turlough) flooded in April and almost dry in July LinkExternal link
