The bed rock here is granite.Immediately above the next bridge downstream - Craignagore Bridge - the river flows on to ancient Silurian rocks which girdle the High Mournes. Sonny's Bridge, also known as Ballaghbeg Bridge, carries the road leading to Thomas' Mountain Granite Quarry.
