Arrowslit window
Arrowslit window
There are several narrow windows in the Shippon, which are done with plain stone blocks. These are said to be arrowslits from the castle, but the use of very narrow slits as ventilation, which will keep out the rain but allow in fresh air, are common practice in Shippons. Not that the stone might not have come from the castle - it is good quality stuff for a shippon. But this one slit has carved stones and is probably the best candidate for being very old as well as re-used. It is on the southern gable end.

See TF0920 : Slit window at the Shippon barn for one of the plain windows, of good quality stonework.
The Shippon Barn

Shippon Barn is a grade II listed building, used in part by the trustees of the BUC who maintain the wellhead park, and in part by the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides of Bourne. This is a grade II listed building, and the listing suggests that the narrow stone window-slits may have been reused from Bourne Castle.

Shippon or shippen is a dialect word for a cow-house, coming from old English "Scipene", meaning "cattle-shed". The word would normally be used alone, so 'Shippon Barn' is nearly tautological.
