Teach Allais (Sweat House) near Barnadearg, Tuam, County Galway
This sweat house (Gaelic: Teach Allais) is considered to be the best preserved example of its kind in Ireland. It probably dates to the early 1700s. Its purpose was to aid in the curing of various ailments through the generation of intense heat in the chamber which instigated profuse sweating of the sick person who then exited the house and immersed themselves in cold water. Within a few metres of this sweat house is a holy well which probably served as the cold water source. The following webpage provides an insight into sweat houses, their architecture and how they functioned, with particular reference to this very fine example: LinkExternal link
