Haven Street station, Isle of Wight Steam Railway, with train headed by a 'Terrier', 2004
View westward, towards Wootton, Newport and Cowes, with a Wootton - Smallbrook Junction train on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, the 1971 heritage successor of the ex-IoW Central/SR Ryde - Newport - Cowes line (closed 21/2/66). The locomotive is an A1X class 0-6-0T built 1876 as A1 No. 46 'Newington', rebuilt to A1X as No. 646 in 1913, when it was also sent to Wight where it worked as No. W8 'Freshwater' until 5/49. Back on the mainland it ran as BR No. 32646 until withdrawn in 11/63, but was not scrapped. In 1979 it was taken back and revived by the IoW Steam Railway, again as No. W8 'Freshwater'.
