Diesel- Electric Locomotive Leaving Brooksbottoms Tunnel
Diesel- Electric Locomotive Leaving Brooksbottoms Tunnel
An East Lancashire Railway train hauled by preserved Class 73 Diesel-electric locomotive 73001 leaves Brooksbottoms tunnel. Built in 1962, this locomotive was ordered as part of the British Railways 1955 Modernisation plan which included the extension of the Southern Region electrification to various main lines. It was later transferred to Merseyrail where it operated until it was withdrawn (sometime between 1998 and 2002).

The 423-yard tunnel is the second of two (the other being the Nuttall Tunnel) on the short section between Ramsbottom and Summerseat. In 2007, the Brooksbottom Tunnel was used as the setting for the armed robbery scenes in the finale LinkExternal link of BBC One's award-winning drama series Life on Mars set in 1973.
