Communication - Old & New
The 1950 Holy Year in the Catholic faith referenced a tradition inaugurated by Pope Boniface VII after a time of war and pestilence. With World War 2 a very vivid memory, Pope Pius XII aspired that the faithful would make a pilgrimage to Rome as well as to special places and shrines. As in other countries, 1950 saw tens of thousands of Irish pilgrims set out for Rome. At home, numerous landmarks were erected by the efforts of local communities, with crosses on promontories, hills and mountains being particularly noticeable. One such cross lies at the top of the modest Knockroe (Gaelic: Cnoc Rua), a hill of circa 125 metres overlooking the village of Abbeyknockmoy in central east Galway. The cross was apparently lit up at night using batteries hauled to the summit. Today, it stands forlorn and withered, a symbol of spiritual communication cowering beneath today's transmission and communication masts that almost obscure it from view.
