W6252 : Strange pillars

taken 8 years ago, 3 km from Kinsale, Co Cork, Ireland

Strange pillars
Strange pillars
I've passed this location many times over the last four years and each time I wondered briefly what these strange structures could be. Only a little research has revealed that these are actually pillars that once held up a metal bridge that carried The Cork and Kinsale Junction Railway on its single tracked route south to the outskirts of Kinsale. The other side of the road has a tall embankment with which the bridge would have connected with.

The land beyond is listed as an horse race course and there are regular equestrienne events held here
