Ridge and Furrow, Howick Hall Farm, Howick, Preston
The photo shows the ancient pattern of ridge and furrow farming carried on until the 17th century. The pattern has survived because the land has been grassland since the system was discontinued, otherwise modern ploughing techniques would have obliterated the undulations in the land. This scene is typical of Ridge and furrow as the land is sloping allowing natural drainage in the furrows down the slope.
