Nineteenth century benchmark on Burford Church
Nineteenth century benchmark on Burford Church
This benchmark at the middle of north face of the tower is unusual in that the arrow is inverted. It was established in the mid nineteenth century during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 191.6000 feet [58.3997 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included as a side level on the Worcester to Aberystwyth levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 90(a). Burford Church. Bolt in North-west side of tower ; 0.69 ft. above surface" (Public Abstract p.552)
