Palatial gates leading to See House

These gates are located in the Cathedral Close opposite St Patrick's CoI Cathedral. Of grey limestone they were initially erected in 1771 at the south-eastern entrance to the palace built for Archbishop Robinson at the Palace Demesne. They were removed in 1963 to make room for an RUC barracks and re-erected in Cathedral Close together with their fine gates, a product of the nineteenth century. Today, they provide access to See House the current residence of the Archbishop. It has been said that "it would be hard to conceive of a greater architectural contrast between the grandeur of this entrance and the ordinariness of the See House to which they afford access." See House, the roof of which can be seen in the image, is a two-storey modern style house built in 1975 to replace the Primatial Palace when it was sold to the Armagh District Council.

Bishop's Palace Demesne :: H8744

The Demesne, covering some 300 acres of undulating parkland and farmland, was created by Archbishop Richard Robinson, 1st Baron Rokeby, who lived between 1708 and 1794. Robinson wanted Armagh to rival Dublin in its architecture and was responsible for founding such notable buildings as the Armagh County Infirmary, Armagh Prison, the Armagh Public Library and the Armagh Observatory. The centre piece of the demesne was, and remains, the Palace - with its surrounding gardens and outbuilding - which was the residence of the Archbishops of the Church of Ireland from 1770 to 1975. The building now houses the Armagh District Council
