Watchtower, Stockton Wood near Stockton
Watchtower, Stockton Wood near Stockton
This watchtower lies more or less in the middle of Stockton Wood on a 1km long east-west path through the wood. The wooden structure is a 'high seat' used by marksmen for deer shooting. These are usually found on woodland rides or on the edges of woodland or fields where deer come out to graze. The western end of the wood where the path enters an open space, can just be seen in the far distance. The eastern half of the wood, and parts of the chalk downland to the east and north-west of the wood, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
