Former gasworks, Belfast (1)
Former gasworks, Belfast (1)
Belfast produced town gas until 1988. The area was redeveloped as “Cromac Wood” after the wood which originally occupied the site. The redevelopment (by Belfast City Council) is every bit as impressive as the Laganside project J3474 : The Waterfront Plaza, Belfast (2), J3474 : Reflections on the River Lagan, Belfast and J3474 : The River Lagan, Belfast but has not received the same public attention. The former offices remain (built in 1887-88 to a design by Robert Watt). This is the clock tower facing the Ormeau Road. See also J3473 : The Gasworks clock, Belfast (detail).
