Hillsborough Castle, Co Down
Hillsborough Castle, Co Down
Situated in the centre of the town, this Georgian mansion was built in the 1770s by Willis Hill, First Marquis of Downshire, and later remodelled in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has been the home of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland since the 1970s, and Her Majesty the Queen and members of the Royal Family stay there when visiting Northern Ireland. The 96 acres of glorious gardens, developed from the 1760s onwards, offer a contrast of ornamental grounds, peaceful woodlands, meandering waterways and trimmed lawns.
