The Presbyterian War Memorial Hostel, Belfast

The Presbyterian War Memorial Hostel, at the corner of Howard Street and Brunswick Street was completed in 1925 to a design by Young & Mackenzie. Its purpose was “to provide a Memorial to perpetuate the memory of the deeds and sacrifices of the sons and daughters of the Church in the cause of truth and freedom in the Great European War 1914-1918” and provided accommodation for young people at work or attending university. A later block was added (possibly in the early 1960’s), on the Brunswick Street side, on the site of a linen warehouse.
The hostel closed in the early 1970’s probably as a result of the bombing campaign and changing social patterns. The Brunswick Street building was used as accommodation for the homeless in more recent times. The extension is vacant. The original building is shops and offices.
The Brunswick Street extension is the subject of the following application for planning permission “30/06/2015 LA04/2015/0800/F Brunswick House 5-7 Brunswick Street Belfast BT2 7GE Demolition of the existing building and construction of a new 10 storey office and retail building with roof level plant area”.
The minutes of the Belfast City Council Planning Committee (17 May 2016) record “The Committee approved the application subject to the imposing of the conditions set out in the case officer’s report and, in accordance with Section 76 of the Planning Act (Northern Ireland) 2015, delegated power to the Director of Planning and Place, in conjunction with the Town Solicitor, to enter into discussions with the applicant to explore the scope of any Planning Agreements which might be realised by way of developer contributions and if so to enter into such an Agreement on behalf of the Council.”. This approval is not recorded on the NI Planning Portal (27 November 2016).
The original building (corner of Howard Street and Brunswick Street) is the subject (10 July 2016) of the following application for planning permission “LA04/2016/1277/F Change of use from offices to 56no serviced short stay/visitor suites and associated alterations including landscaping 42-48 Howard Street Belfast”.
