SO1517 : Decorative roadside rocks

taken 7 years ago, near to Llangynidr, Powys, Wales

Decorative roadside rocks
Decorative roadside rocks
Though this shot is taken looking north, this low outcrop will be noticed most readily by those who travel south on the 'Beaufort Road' leaving the hairpin out of the Usk valley behind them. The carious ('honeycomb') weathering of this calcareous sandstone is seen elsewhere where this rock occurs. It is near the base of the Carboniferous Limestone, only a few feet above the top of the Old Red Sandstone.
