Richard Haslam's Pevsner guide of 1979 notes that the church was "substantially rebuilt" in 1868 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. That implies reconstruction of the entire fabric but retaining the old plan and foundations, apart from the addition of small transepts to north and south.

"Scott reproduced the old work only approximately, e.g. the polygonal ribbed ceiling over the choir. Some old woodwork was kept in the low screen, which has four flat quatrefoil-headed lights ... either side of a wide cambered archway."
