Norton bier
The wheeled bier in
SO3067 : St Andrew's Church in Norton / Eglwys Sant Andreas yn Norton was purchased for £30 in 1926, and was available only for funerals from houses within a strictly defined area within the parish. Charges for its use were levied on a sliding scale according to the rateable value of the bereaved household, ranging from two shillings (10p) to ten shillings (50p) - with a minimum fee of five shillings (25p) for "outsiders of the parish".
With the advent of motorised hearses, the old bier has been relegated to use as a tract table, for display of leaflets near the entrance to the church.
