View North towards Quintin Castle

This is a privately owned castle located on the site of a castle built by John de Courcy and his Cambro-Norman retinue in 1184. Later the castle became the home of the local Savage Family who also had a castle at Portaferry and following them their descendants, the Smiths. In the 17thC the castle was purchased by Sir James Montgomery. By the first half of the 19thC Quintin Castle had been reduced to ruin. The castle was restored in the 1850s. For a time in the 1079s and 80s the castle was an old folks home.
