View from Mount Gable towards Lough Coolin
View from Mount Gable towards Lough Coolin
This view is taken from the flat topped Mount Gable (aka Benn Levy) which is a 416-metre high hill in County Galway, and is situated on the isthmus between Lough Corrib to the south and Lough Mask to the north. At the base of the prominence of Mount Gable is Lough Coolin which we see in the centre of the image. This lake was a favoured outing for the Guinness family whose summer estate was nearby. A horse & carriage track encircles the lake. The lake is about 830 metres x 610 metres at its broadest dimensions. Apparently, it was a trout lake until pike were introduced sometime in the late 1950s/early 1960s which resulted in the trout population being erased. The lake is the source of freshwater for the village of Clonbur (An Fhairche in Gaelic). This image was taken from a height of 400 metres and the lake lies 700 metres distant at an elevation of 161 metres. Also very evident in the photo is a portion of the southern shore of Lough Mask, the sixth largest lake in Ireland, and lying 17 metres approx. above sea level.
