Pladdy Lug Beacon viewed from Ballyquintin Point
This 10m high white glazed tile beacon marks the site of the dangerous Pladdy Lug reef which runs west of Ballyquintin Point and which is partly exposed at low water. The existing unlit daylight beacon dates from 1926, the old one having been destroyed during a storm the previous year. In the 19thC three ships were wrecked on the Pladdy Lug reef:-

1. In 1856 the schooner "Robert E Ward" carrying coal from Troon to Castle Espie.

2. in 1867 the Italian Sailing ship "Gardella" carrying ingots from Ardrossan to Genoa, and

3. in 1874 the brig "Cumbrian" carrying a cargo of coal.

The Portaferry Lifeboat station has a photo (halfway down the page) showing a yacht grounded next to the beacon in 2003.
