'Stowe' at Cranmore
'Stowe' at Cranmore
A Southern Railway 'V' or 'Schools' class which entered service in 1934.

The locomotive was withdrawn by BR in 1962 and purchased by Lord Montague for display at his motor museum at Beaulieu. It was moved to the East Somerset Railway in 1973 but never ran there. Subsequently moved to the Bluebell Railway in 1980, it was given a full overhaul and ran on the line until 1991 at the expiry of its boiler certificate. It is currently being overhauled on the Bluebell line and is now owned by the Maunsell Locomotive Society, having been purchased from Lord Montague in 2000.

Three of this class survive from the original 40: 'Cheltenham', part of the National Collection but currently running on the Mid-Hants Railway; 'Repton', operational on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway; and 'Stowe'.
