SK4175 : Queuing for 'Tornado'
taken 7 years ago, near to Brimington, Derbyshire, England
Barrow hill is a preserved locomotive roundhouse along with new developments like the Deltic preservation society shed and commercial overhaul buildings.
A typical Midland Railway square design, the building was operational from 1870 until 9 February 1991. After abandonment by British Rail the site had become derelict but thankfully after a major effort listing was granted. Following this Chesterfield council put £1,000,000 into restoration (including a new roof). Since then it has become a thriving centre for rail restorations, even for modern diesels. There are several steam locomotives on show as well.
Recently the ex MR signal box from Pinxton has been placed on the site of the original, rebuilding of the demolished coal stage is a medium term aim. Entry is by donation.
