Stately houses dated c1730, each in three bays and four storeys plus basement (the top storeys were probably added c1792). Brown brick with red brick dressings (TQ3080 : Detail of 37 Craven Street). The street was laid out for William Craven from 1730 by the architect Henry Flitcroft, aided by the carpenter Thomas Phillips. The east side is well preserved. Grade II listed.
Benjamin Franklin lived at no. 36 between 1757 and 1775.
1888 puts it in the William Ewart Gladstone era; but is it he? If not, who then? There are apocryphal stories of notable Conservatives confusing the NLC for a public convenience when on their way to the House. Perhaps this is one of 'them' leaving.
