TQ3079 : Richmond Terrace, Whitehall

taken 10 years ago, near to City of Westminster, England

Richmond Terrace, Whitehall
Richmond Terrace, Whitehall
Built in 1822-25 by George Harrison (not that one) to a design of his brother, Henry, and "the chief survivor of early C19 improvements on the Crown lands east of Whitehall". The order used is Greek Ionic, the dressings are of Bath stone, and the brick of an unusual brown hue. Grade II* listed.
Part of the Department of Health's enclave at the south end of Whitehall, everything behind the facade was removed in the 1980s, and the facade itself restored which explains its somewhat bloodless feel.
The protest in front concerned UK support for Joseph Kabila, president of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
