Sir John Soane (1753-1837) was the son of a Berkshire bricklayer. He trained as a successful architect and became Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy. Sir John bought the houses Nos 12, 13 and 14 Lincoln's Inn Fields, living with is wife and family in No 12; making a Museum for his collections in No 13; and, rebuilding and renting out the front rooms of No 14 having incorporated the back of that house into No 13.
