William of Orange
This statue of William III (William of Orange) dominates the market square in Petersfield. Statues of William are rare in England; this one was fashioned after a bequest by Sir William Jolliffe, the local MP, in 1750. It is generally attributed to Henry Cheere (or his brother John) and is grade I listed. The inscription reads: ‘To the most high and mighty prince William the Third who by his many and excellent services deserved well of the nation: when the state was tottering he held it firm: in good time he made safe the pure and simple worship of God; He restored and confirmed to Law its power and Parliament its dignity. Sir William Jolliffe, wishing to leave some memorial of the loving zeal which he himself had devoted to the cause at once of liberty and of liberty’s royal champion, provided in his will for this statue to be erected in the town. Executors – Samuel Tufnel, Edward Northey, John Jolliffe.’
