Stibbard All Saints church
Here is a church that has changed little over the centuries. Some restoration took place in 1746. In 1820 the tower has a stumpy spire but was removed in the Victorian era; a new roof, font, stone pulpit and a few benches were also installed at the same time. Strangely a blocked clerestory is on the north side, suggesting that perhaps the south wall has been rebuilt, most unusual! Everything else is basically mediaeval. Three feet in front of the chancel arch is a bressummer beam, a rare survival from the days of the rood loft. Its appearance is marred slightly by the complexity of the chancel roof. Beneath the plastered roof of the nave are some lovely 15th c. bench-ends with poppy-heads. The piscina has gone but the two level sedilia is beneath an early arch. An interesting church with a few unusual features.
