Milkhall Pond Wildlife Reserve
Milkhall Pond Wildlife Reserve
Until 1928 the pond, next to the Lead Burn, was a reservoir for the paper mill at Valleyfield, Penicuik. In 1976 it was acquired by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and managed as a reserve. The small area includes a range of habitats and supports almost 200 invertebrate species, amphibians, 43 bird species, 16 mammal species and 141 plant species plus a locally rare spider (from the nearby information board). This morning part of the pond was frozen.
