The River Penk and Deepmoor Drain near Stafford
Looking downstream.
At the centre of the image the very old Deepmore Drain channel flows into the River Penk but used to continue north-east to meet the River Sow. During the 1970s flood management operations, the River Penk was diverted away from its original course, and routed here to flow along the widened and deepened drain. This side of the central trees, a short aqueduct from the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal crossed the drain to St Thomas Lock, which lowered boats to the flood plain. The boats then navigated along a cut channel north-west to join the River Sow, and then on to Stafford.
There are active plans for the Stafford Riverway Link to be restored, but it is not yet clear whether the aqueduct across the (now) River Penk will be rebuilt, or the boats will travel down stream to the River Sow confluence, then up to Stafford. The 1970s bridge in this image would need to be raised.
