NS3779 : Entering Carman Quarry

taken 6 years ago, near to Renton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

Entering Carman Quarry
Entering Carman Quarry
The trees not far ahead on the right are part of a line that curves gradually to the left, so that others in the same line can be seen directly behind them.

They stand on an indistinct curving ridge which corresponds to the north-eastern (right foreground) and the northern to north-western (right background) edge of the Fairy Knowe (for which, see the end-note).

See NS3679 : Leaving Carman Quarry for a view in the opposite direction from just beyond the nearer trees.
The former Fairy Knowe Quarry

Red sandstone was quarried here. The site was formerly a small hill called Fairy Knowe, but it became a quarry at the end of the nineteenth century; later maps call it Carman Quarry. It has long been disused. See LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view putting this site in its geological context. See Link and Link (in a Geograph article) for more on the quarry, the Fairy Knowe, and old traditions about this site and Havoc Hole.
