The buildings on the right hand side date from the 1680s. The street is private and belongs to St Paul's Cathedral.

Beyond the dark wall at the far end once stood Newgate Prison until the early 20th century. On the other side of the wall was Deadman's Walk, a passage so called because prisoners walked along it to their execution and were buried beneath it afterwards. The wall is supposedly haunted by the Black Dog of Newgate which is described as a shapeless black mass that slithers along the top of the wall, then descends into Amen Court before melting away. The story is that its origins go back to the reign of King Henry III when the prisoners at Newgate resorted to cannibalism during a famine. One of their victims was a sorcerer imprisoned there but retribution followed in the form of a hideous black dog which killed those responsible and then returned to haunt Newgate Prison.
