Tomb of John Locke, High Laver
John Locke (1632-1704) was an English philosopher who greatly influenced the development of the liberal democracies found throughout Western Europe and North America, not least through his influence on the writing of the US constitution. He was also famous for taking on difficult philosophical questions such as what makes things what they are and the nature of personal identity, issues that still perplex philosophers today. Regardless of whether one agrees with his views or not, no one can deny the profound effect they had on the progress of civilisation. Locke's connection with High Laver was that he spent the last fourteen years of his life within the parish at the now demolished manor house of Oates (see
TL5210 : Site of the Manor of Oates) as a guest of Lady Damaris Cudworth Masham, the young wife of Sir Francis Masham, the Member of Parliament for Essex.
