SE1376 : Smoke across the moor

taken 6 years ago, 4 km S of Colsterdale, North Yorkshire, England

Smoke across the moor
Smoke across the moor
Smoke from controlled heather burning drifts across Pott Moor beyond a line of grouse butts, just one of which can be seen in the photo. For many years the moors have been burned in order to create areas where new shoots of heather would spring up for the benefit of grouse. The prime season for this has always been late winter into early spring, but in recent years there seems to have been a move towards autumn or early winter burning. These fires and drifts of smoke can often be seen from the A1 and further east.
