SE2219 : River Calder downstream of Greenwood Lock
taken 7 years ago, near to Ravensthorpe, Kirklees, England
In 1985/6 I worked as an assistant engineer on an interesting project for the Yorkshire Water Authority (as it was then) to construct a new sewerage system through the Ravensthorpe area of West Yorkshire. It involved a variety of technical approaches, but the overall result was being able to abandon a pumping station at Shepley Bridge, a small sewage works in the Spen Valley, a few miles of undersized sewers and several small storm overflows. There was still one new overflow into the River Calder, but it was intended only to operate no more than a couple of times a year on average.
I had previously uploaded here the few photographs I had taken with me at the end of the project, but in 2017, I revisited the area and tried to find as many as possible of the work locations that I remembered. After 30 years my memory may be playing tricks so I cannot guarantee factual or locational accuracy.
