In the foreground is the junction of the Greenwood Cut with the main river. Just beyond it is the outfall of the storm water drain that runs within the canal embankment (see shared description).
Revisiting Ravensthorpe :: SE2220

In 1985/6 I worked as an assistant engineer on an interesting project for the Yorkshire Water Authority (as it was then) to construct a new sewerage system through the Ravensthorpe area of West Yorkshire. It involved a variety of technical approaches, but the overall result was being able to abandon a pumping station at Shepley Bridge, a small sewage works in the Spen Valley, a few miles of undersized sewers and several small storm overflows. There was still one new overflow into the River Calder, but it was intended only to operate no more than a couple of times a year on average.

I had previously uploaded here the few photographs I had taken with me at the end of the project, but in 2017, I revisited the area and tried to find as many as possible of the work locations that I remembered. After 30 years my memory may be playing tricks so I cannot guarantee factual or locational accuracy.
