Remains of St Oswald's Anglo Saxon Minster and Medieval Priory
The remaining wall incorporates the remnants of a church built in about the year 900 by Ęthelflęd, daughter of King Alfred the Great. She and her brother Edward brought the relics of Saint Oswald here, and for some time thereafter the minster was known for its wealth and miracles. However, by 1100 it was overshadowed by St Peter's Abbey, which went on to become Gloucester Cathedral. In 1152 it became an Augustinian priory, but this was dissolved by 1537 during the dissolution of the monasteries. Part of the structure became a parish church, but all apart from this single remaining wall was demolished in 1656.
