National Railway Museum - No. 1
A stunningly pretty locomotive that exudes age and breeding. This is the so-called 'Stirling single'. Express passenger locomotive built by the Great Northern Railway in 1870. It is a 4-2-2 with 8'1" driving wheels. This class participated in the rivalry with other companies known as the "Race to the North" in 1895 and they were capable of 85 MPH. The whole class was withdrawn by 1916 and only No. 1 survives.
