Gunnersbury Park :: TQ1979

Gunnersbury Park is a fascinating place with an interesting history. Previous owners include the Bishop of London, Princess Amelia (daughter of George II) and the last private owners, the de Rothschild family who sold the estate to Ealing Borough Council and Acton Borough Council for leisure use in 1925.

It is a huge space, over 186 acres, consisting of landscaped grounds with mature trees, open grassed spaces, sports fields (including pitch & putt), lakes and swingparks. There are 22 listed buildings on the site, including former mansions, a former royal bath house, an orangery, Gothic ruins, a temple and stables. Gunnersbury Park House is the larger of the two mansions and is home to a local history museum for the boroughs of Ealing and Hounslow. Gunnersbury House is located adjacent to Gunnersbury Park House on a terrace overlooking the mature landscaped grounds and orangery.

The former walled garden is now occupied by Capel Manor College which offers courses in horticulture, landscaping and related subjects LinkExternal link

Gunnersbury is a park of national significance, registered as Grade 2* by English Heritage. Sadly, it is in a state of disrepair and decline and is also listed by English Heritage as one of the top 12 'at risk' properties in England, due to the large amount of investment needed to restore and repair the Buildings and landscape.
