Carndonagh is the main market and shopping town in the north of the Inishowen peninsula in County Donegal, close to Trawbreaga Bay. The town lies in the shadow of Slieve Snaght and was founded as a monastic settlement in the 5th Century by St. Patrick or his followers. It is notable as the site of the Donagh Cross (or St. Patrick's Cross, C4645 : St Patrick's Cross, Carndonough) which is believed to date from the 7th century. The original Irish name, Carn Domhnach, means the cairn or burial mound of the church.
