Smithfield Market, Belfast (1)
Smithfield Market, Belfast (1)
The original Smithfield market was built in 1848 on the site of the old corn and hide markets. A ramshackle place of second-hand shops it was full of atmosphere. It was destroyed by a bomb and replaced by a temporary building which continued the tradition. The temporary building (and surrounding area) was levelled for the Castle Court shopping centre J3374 : The Castle Court, Belfast. The present structure has never achieved the greatness or celebrity of its predecessors. The view is from Smithfield Square North.
