Llansteffan is one of a string of Marcher Boroughs on the Bristol Channel coast established in the early years of the Norman conquest to allow communication with Pembroke and Ireland without passing through hostile inland territory. The Tywi was the eastern boundary of the Kingdom of Dyfed. The alternative to ferrying the river here was to cross at Carmarthen, as the railway does today.
